Street Breeze

Street Breeze is a quarterly newspaper written, designed, edited, published and distributed by and for homeless and at-risk youth. It’s a unique approach toward meeting California’s goals of literacy, the arts, diversity and serving children at risk.

That was more than seven years ago and since that time, Street Breeze has become a quarterly publication with a distribution of 10,000 issues annually. Countless teenagers have joined the Street Breeze editorial staff and over the years left their mark in print before moving on in life. “These kids plan the editorial content of the paper, give journalistic assignments and design the paper layout all themselves. It’s a total team effort.”

Street Breeze publications are comprised of poetry, book reviews, articles, interviews and stories, as well as artwork and photographs. Features emphasize issues of interest and problems related to teen homelessness. Past issues have included features providing youth perspective on what it is like to live outside, coping with teen violence and preventing sexual assault. Lighter stories have highlighted topics such as visiting musicians, good movies and outstanding video games or restaurants. Another important component of the paper is a listing of valuable resources that provide services and assistance to teens living on the streets. “Many of these articles are surprisingly insightful,” says Chandler. “I’m constantly impressed.”
